Flawless For Ever...
By Summer Johnson

You're getting ready for a night out on the town... Hot shoes? Check. Fab frock? Check. Flawless complexion? Not so much. Most of us need help in the fresh-face category, especially during these hot summer months when makeup can look more like a mudslide. But, worry not; your skin savior has arrived!

The Make Up For Ever line has a loyal fan base among professional makeup artists. Not only do Make Up For Ever products protect skin from the environment, but they are known for delivering an even, long-lasting complexion.

The road to perfect skin starts with the HD Microperfecting Primer, which protects the skin’s surface and hides flaws while creating a smooth canvas ready for foundation application. Then, for sheer, natural coverage, the HD Invisible Cover Foundation is essential. Finally, banish oily skin with HD Microfinish Powder, a finishing powder that softens and slightly mattifies the skin to deliver a radiant, airbrushed finish—the perfect finishing touch to your summer look!

The Bee's Knees: MAC's Sweet New Collection
By Summer Johnson

This month, make a beeline for your nearest MAC counter for their new, naturally-sweet line and discover what everyone's buzzing about! The secret behind the luminous, glowing skin you've been seeing all summer, the Naked Honey Collections' soft hues and warm tones are essentials in creating the season's signature fresh face.

Longing for a sun-kissed look, I braved the swarm of eager buyers and recently spent some time at MAC, where I tested the pearlized, high-light powder in Honey Light, the eye shimmer in Crème de Miel and the lip glass in She's a Star—all from the Naked Honey Collection. With all shades consisting of hints of yellow-gold, reddened peach and copper-brown, the combination gave me the exact healthy, fresh-from-the-beach skin I was seeking.

In addition, I indulged in some bath and body products. With Naked Honey, the lost luxury of the milk and honey bath has returned; the line's body wash, hand and body creams and skin salves are all derived from organic beeswax and honey and come in fabulous, fun fragrances like Africanimal.

I left smelling great and with a honey tan. Pretty sweet!

Hair Today…
By Summer Johnson

With so many cuts, styles and hues to choose from, when it comes to hair, it's easy for a girl to get confused. Luckily, there are experts, like Shelly Beshears—an expert stylist and L‘Oreal colorist at The Face & the Body, to translate the trends.

According to Beshears, "part of finding the perfect shade is experimenting with color." A main focus this season, she says, is emphasizing texture and adding dimension, without going for over-the-top highlights. The key is mixing peek-a-boo highlights that brighten your face with subtle lowlights for depth. The truly brave are adding personality to their hair by way of sexy, more advance colors this season—pink or silver undertones for blondes, purple or green for brunettes. Beshears advises gradually building intensity to prevent these undertones from appearing too deliberate.

As for style, Beshears recommends turning off straightening irons and instead working touchable, natural waves. Meshing L'Oreal's new, natural colors with fresh-from-the-beach texture will give you the hot summer style you're seeking.

In a word association exercise, the following prompts and responses would likely too-often ring true:

"High school"
"Graduation"

"University"
"Alumni"

"Beauty School"
"Dropout"

Inside Sephora
By Autumn Sij

With over 250 brands of makeup, beauty accessories and skin care and hair products, it's no wonder most girls feel like a kid in a candy store when walking into a Sephora. Stocked with aisles upon aisles of top beauty brands, including Sephora's private label, finding the tried-and-true products for creating your signature look is simple—but it's likely you'll discover new, never-knew-you-needed staples to add to your makeup bag, as well.

On a recent trip to Sephora, I met with one of the in-store beauty specialists—essentially a temporary, personal makeup artist I was dying to take home with me. But, she gave me the confidence, tricks and tools I needed to recreate the look she designed for me, which I loved. She taught me how to take the look, which meshed spring trends and my personal style, from day to night, and worked with many different brands, including Stila, Bare Escentuals and NARS—which I had never used before, but of which I became an instant fan.

According to my beauty specialist, the one thing every woman should always have in her makeup bag, regardless of season or trend, is the perfect shade of red lipstick. She helped me to find mine—Red Lizard by NARS; I had no idea I could pull off red!

Next purchase? A larger makeup bag...

Stephanie Stordahl-Wynn, Assistant Hair & Makeup Director, Saint Louis Fashion Week
By Autumn Sij

Returning to Saint Louis Fashion Week, this time as Assistant Hair & Makeup Director, Stephanie Stordahl-Wynn—founder of True Magic Make-Up Artistry—worked her magic this March on everything from developing hair and makeup concepts to carrying out the designers‘ wishes for the runway. Recently, Stephanie sat down to give me the goods on everything from her upcoming projects to her favorite beauty products to how to get that summer glow every girl's wanting this time of year.

Q: How did you become interested in makeup artistry and styling?
A:
I have been into art since I was a kid. I went to college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where I received a Fine Arts Degree, but couldn't figure out what I wanted to do. I decided to get my cosmetology license and a theatrical makeup design certificate and just ran with it.

Q: What drew you to working with Saint Louis Fashion Week?
A:
I worked with Saint Louis Fashion Week last fall as the lead artist for the urban lines. I enjoyed the atmosphere as a whole and knew that I wanted to do it again the following season. I love working with the team; there is not one person on the entire Saint Louis Fashion Week team I wouldn't want to work with. It's a lot like a family.

Q: What makeup products do you swear by?
A:
I swear by MAC's paints for the eyes. They keep your eye makeup on all day, keep your eye shadows true to their shades and neutralize the eyelid—all in one tube. I also love Fresh's Super Nova mascara.

Q: What spring makeup trend do you love right now?
A:
I really like the pale, metallic lip.

Q: What is one thing that women can easily do to switch up their standard makeup routine?
A:
Use a bronzer to add an easy, subtle glow. You'll be amazed by how many people ask about your tan.

Q: Which celebrities would you like to work with?
A:
I work a lot in the hip-hop industry, so I would probably have to say—in the same industry—Ciara or Pink. They are both very edgy and both try many different looks.

Q: What projects are you working on right now?
A:
I am currently working on my own body paint project, which I'm very excited for. I am also working on my own show, which will be on September 5th, 2009. It's going to be a hot show with extreme hair, makeup, body paint and more—definitely unique and very edgy.

Q: Sounds great! Anything else in the works?
A:
I am launching my own sister company for models. Basically, it's a modeling agency, with the perk of being teamed with TrueMagic. The name of it is MyxedBerryz. I am very excited about that, as well.

Nail It!
By Autumn Sij

Where can get Bronzed to Perfection, Done Out in Deco and Overexposed in South Beach all for under $20? Look no further than your local salons and beauty stores, as all are shades found in OPI's new South Beach Collection.

Not only is OPI a leader in the professional beauty industry, but it has also been the official nail color of Saint Louis Fashion Week for the past two seasons.

One hot nail trend to hit the Fall/Winter ''09/''10 runways was to keep it short and sweet. At Project:Design!, Michael Shead chose half-inch nude nails, while Veronica Kelly of Socialite opted for a punch of poppy pink. Combining both ideas, abbreviated nails with a cool coral color—like OPI's Suzie and the Lifeguard—are slated to be big hits this summer. Feeling a little more daring? Try for a brighter hue like On Collins Ave or Green-wich Village--a juicy, electric lime Jerell Scott chose for his models this season.

Christiaan Torrez, Midwest Regional Education Manager, Tarte Cosmetics
By Racquel Russell

If you're one of many who's been know to spend hours at Sephora, then you're undoubtedly familiar with Tarte—the natural, eco-friendly, highly-coveted cosmetics line that has had beauty product fiends "going green" for nearly a decade. I recently had some face time with Christiaan Torrez, Tarte's Midwest Regional Education Manager, who divulged insider beauty tips, the secrets of Tarte's success and the musts for every makeup maven this season.

Q: How did Tarte come to be?
A:
Founder Maureen Kelly was frustrated with all the unhealthy and unglamorous cosmetics on the market, so she decided to do something about it. In 2000, she launched Tarte at Manhattan-based Henri Bendel and on beauty.com. Maureen brought a fresh perspective to the industry with cutting-edge formulas, natural ingredients and runway-inspired packaging. Today, Tarte is one of the fastest-growing color brands and our products are available nationwide at Sephora, on QVC and in boutiques.

Q: Maureen has definitely built a successful business.
A:
She's such an inspiration. In 2008, she received the Metro New York Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award in the Retail & Consumer Services category and was also named the 2006 Woman of the Year by Entrepreneur Magazine and OPEN from American Express. She is also a dedicated philanthropist; since the company's inception, Maureen has insisted on donating all discontinued products to nationwide and local charities—including Habitat for Humanity and the Sustainable Amazon Partnership (SAP), a public and private collaboration to promote lasting sustainable management of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest.

Q: How is Tarte different from other popular cosmetic brands?
A:
Tarte is the leader in earth-engineered beauty and offers the widest selection of natural cosmetics full of Skinvigorating ingredients—including vitamins, minerals and natural fruit and plant extracts. Tarte is on a mission to prove that glamour can be good for you, using high-performance naturals that bring clinical skincare results to the client. What's more, the company's runway-inspired cases and compacts are more then just pretty packaging; Tarte is helping consumers reduce their carbon footprint by sticking strictly to sustainable, recyclable and eco-friendly packaging.

Q: As Midwest Regional Education Manager, what does your job entail?
A:
My team and I are ambassadors for Tarte; we're the voices in the field, educating clients about the brand. We introduce them to the company's Skinvigorating ingredients and color range. Additionally, it's our job to demonstrate how to use our makeup; we're always providing the latest tips and tricks from the runway.

Q: What Tarte product can you not live without?
A:
Tarte Cheek Stain in Natural Beauty. You can wear it on your cheeks and lips. It's formulated with our t5 Super Fruit Complex, a proprietary blend of the five most active super fruits—acai, goji, maracuja, acerola and pomegranate. Our Cheek Stain hydrates and keeps your skin from looking dried-out, which powder can sometimes do.

Q: What's your best beauty tip?
A:
Use the amazing ReCreate Natural Anti-Aging Foundation with Wrinkle Rewind Technology. It's a natural, powerhouse foundation that took years to develop. It has goji berry extract, wheat protein, mineral pigments and the amazing peat extract that everyone is raving about internationally. Plus, it's clinically proven to decrease fine lines and wrinkles by 67 percent after six weeks and to increase skin moisture by 54 percent within 15 minutes of application. In essence, you're getting clinical skincare results, SPF 15 and coverage all in one product. I urge women who like the mineral concept but hate the drying effect of powder to try this new alternative.

Q: What celebrities do you think wear makeup best?
A:
Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift--who recently wore Tarte on the cover of Rolling Stone, Carrie Underwood and Rachel Bilson.

Q: What past makeup trend do you hope never resurfaces?
A:
I truly hope that heavy lip liner paired with much-lighter color on the inside never comes back!

Q: With Mother's Day coming up, any gift ideas you'd recommend?
A:
The Be Good to Your Mother (Earth) 24.7 Natural Lip Sheers and Reusable Natural Cotton Tote Set. All three of the lip sheers included are enriched with coconut oil, beeswax, mango butter, vitamin E and peppermint oil. It retails for $35.

Q: Can you dish about any Tarte products that are in the works?
A:
Our MultiplEYE Natural Lash Enhancer, which is clinically proven to increase the appearance of lash length by 152 percent after six weeks. MultiplEYE includes a natural blend of soy protein, cellulose, vitamin C and our own proprietary HydroPlant Peptide. At just $65, it's an affordable, natural way to elongate lashes.

Lisa Kalz, Hair & Makeup Director, Saint Louis Fashion Week
By Racquel Russell

Coming off her second season as Hair & Makeup Director for Saint Louis Fashion Week, Lisa Kalz—renowned makeup artist in the film, television and the print industries—recently took the time to dish on everything, from how her love affair with makeup began to what it's been like working on the set of the George Clooney film, "Up In The Air".

Q: How did you become interested in makeup artistry?
A:
I fell into the makeup business working for Chanel and Lancome as an advisor and regional makeup artist, and also in the corporate arena; I was ready for a change. It was my father—Gus Fasone, who has been in the entertainment industry—who suggested that I go to Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts in Burbank, CA. It was there that I found my love and passion for beauty, period makeup and special effects makeup in film, television, print and on runway.

Q: You just recently wrapped up Saint Louis Fashion Week. What was that like?
A:
Working the fashion show as Creative Director was very complex. A lot of the makeup and hair designs that were initially requested by the designers ended up changing for the better. I wasn't able to have the collections in front of me before the show, so—once I had the garments to look at on the day of show—I felt that we needed to change a few of the makeup looks; you have to be careful not to take away from the collection. It was very gratifying to know that the designers liked and accepted my vision. Also, the hair and makeup teams were so fantastic; they had some challenges, but they did their work in the most professional and artistic way!

Q: What were some of your favorite looks Saint Louis Fashion Week designers chose?
A:
I loved Michael Drummond's looks for The Exquisite Corpse collection and Love Brigade's, along with Jennifer Neal's, Bolongaro Trevor's, KayOss's,… I LOVED THEM ALL!

Q: What makeup products do you swear by?
A:
I love and am addicted to Makeup Forever and Chanel, although I am a makeup junky and have and carry in my case a multitude of different brands.

Q: What current makeup trend do you love?
A:
I am not about the trend as much as I am about personalized makeup. All women are different; I love creating a look that best describes who I am working with. I will say that I am huge fan of classic films (from the '20s, '30s, '40s, '50s and '60s); the makeup was so beautiful and feminine.

Q: From where do you draw inspiration?
A:
Again, period makeup is what inspires me, and I mesh that with inspiring looks I find in magazines; I pull tear sheets of various eye, cheek and lip looks that I have found to be interesting and look to those when creating a look for a particular project.

Q: You've worked with a slew of celebrity talent in film and television. Who's been your favorite?
A:
I have enjoyed most of the celebrities that I have worked with, but I'll have to say Piper Laurie, Tom Beringer and James Brolin; I can't pick just one! Penny Marshall was pretty amazing, too! Robert Plant, too!

Q: Who's on your clientele wish list?
A:
I would love to work with Reese Witherspoon!

Q: You're currently working on the George Clooney film "Up In The Air". Any insider info you can share?
A:
Working on the set has been very relaxed. The professionalism and organization on this project, along with all the amazing talent, has been wonderful. And, when I say talent, I'm not only talking about the actors—but also the talented crew that works behind the scenes. I am proud to say that I am so fortunate to be a part of Local 493 here in St Louis!

Q: Is there one project in particular that you enjoyed working on the most?
A:
My passion is film, but—since Attilio and Jill turned me on to Saint Louis Fashion Week—it has become a second love. Very creative; very similar to film, in regards to the collaboration from all involved. And, I am so thankful for their confidence.

Q: What other projects do you have lined up?
A:
I have a feature this summer in Chicago titled "Johnny Violence" with Toryn Green. Also, another in Europe.

MAC at New York Fashion Week
By Mary Bayne

The official makeup sponsor of New York Fashion Week, MAC's international team of over 75 PRO Makeup Artists recently flocked to the Big Apple to create the stunning, cutting-edge makeup looks seen on nearly every runway—and to define the beauty trends of the Fall/Winter 09/10 season.

This February, MAC made up models for more than 75 New York shows, including Proenza Schouler, Diane von Furstenberg, Costello Tagliapietra, Rodarte, Doo.Ri and Zac Posen. For Miss Sixty, MAC created a rocker-chic makeup look, best described as "messed-up perfection". For Twinkle by Taiwanese designer Wenlan Chia, MAC's Gregory Arlt complemented the quirky and whimsical collection with a retro look befitting a girl on her "first date in the 50's". At the Tuleh show, the makeup was inspired by 1930s Parisian women; Polly Osmond for MAC created the look by combining a "muted smoky" eye using a soft gray hue, accentuating the eyebrows by elongating their shape and staining the lips—the most prominent feature—with a ghoulish mauve shade.

Click here to download full face charts.

Of the most memorable MAC makeup looks seen in New York was at the Richie Rich (half of the former dynamic duo Heatherette) show, where MAC Key Makeup Artist Kabuki created "a Norma Jean-to-Marilyn theme" and exaggerated the makeup so that it would carry throughout the expansive Grand Ballroom at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Kabuki designed two looks for the show: the first suggested a bit of Andy Warhol icon Edie Sedgwick, with big eyes and taupe pencil-defined brows; the second was the first look taken to the extreme with false eyelashes, darker colors on the eyes, deeper hues on the cheeks, shiny red lip gloss and lots of glitter.

The MAC makeup and tools used for the Richie Rich looks included The Studio Sculpt Foundation, #36 false eyelashes, Fluidline Eye Liner Gel, Powerpoint Eye Pencil, Grand Duos eye shadows in Love Rock and Moon River, Plush Lash Mascara, Mineralize Blush in Love Thing, MAC Pro Glitter in Reflects Rust, Lip Pencil in Cherry and Dazzleglass lip gloss in a to-be-named medium pink (available in stores later this year).

Q&A: Donnal Chung, Owner of Donnal's Hair Design
By Autumn Sij

Q: What do you think is one big hair trend we'll see in St. Louis this spring?
A:
I hope to see some short bangs, and people pushing out of their comfort zones.

Q: What are some of your top tips for St. Louis women, when it comes to choosing a hairstyle?
A:
Women in St. Louis spend a lot of time and money on their clothing. Hair is an accessory you wear everyday. Don't be afraid to try new things; hair always grows back. And don't always just follow other people or the trends; you have to do what works best for you.

Q: Do you have advice for anyone that steps into your salon for the first time?
A:
Let us know about your lifestyle, your profession and keep an open mind. Let us understand who you are as a person, then trust us to do our job; we are the professionals.

Q: Alive or dead, who are your style inspirations?
A:
I love the art of Al Hirshfeld because he can feel each character and draw who they are; every detail is who that person is. It's just like my hair philosophy; the hair first has to fit the person. Every line he draws shows his passion, beauty and imagination, just like every hair I cut.

Q: Who would you most love to work with and why?
A:
I like to work with people who have a lot of passion. I like to have competition in my life so I keep learning, not for the money or the title. I also would like to work with the Vidal Sassoon team of the early 1980s.

A Pen That Works
By Mary Bayne

The never-ending quest to find that perfect eyeliner may be coming to an end—thanks to Penultimate Eye Liner. From the new Chill collection, MAC describes their Penultimate as "a liquid pen-style liner that provides the ultimate precise, bold line in a rich, deep carbon black shade." It goes on fluidly, in one steady stroke, to style any fashion of eye line. Saint Louis Fashion Week's Key Makeup Artist, MAC Pro Team's Gina Bettelli, used Penultimate at the Iceberg S/S 09 show and called it "a savior for quick lining without a brush".

The Penultimate is perfect for anyone who wants the look of liquid eyeliner, but is klutzy when it comes to using "regular" liquid liner applicators. The pointy tip of the Penultimate helps even makeup novices achieve the perfect line; no gaps, no messy edges. Use one line to make your eyes more noticeable, or build on it for a retro, Amy Winehouse look. However you decide to work it, one thing's for certain—you'll never be so sad to see a pen run out.

The Face & The Body & The Whole Nine Yards.
By Autumn Sij

You've cut back on carbs, you've started a daily journal, you've registered for a yoga class-you and the rest of America are on this "new year, new you" kick. Lucky for you, you've got The Face & The Body spa at your service to make sure your resolutions ring true-whether you're wanting weekly cosmetic maintenance, a fresh-for-2009 makeover or one of many life-changing med-spa treatments. Founder Peggy Mitchusson filled us in on all that The Face & The Body has to offer.

Q: What makes The Face & The Body unique?
A:
We are a full service salon and spa committed to helping the whole client. We believe in providing an experience, not just a haircut. Our 30 years of experience means that we've refined the art of service and we have proven products and services that consistently provide for the health, wellness and beauty needs of our clients.

Q: What kind of services do you offer?
A:
We offer both traditional salon and spa services-such as facials, massages, body treatments, hair, makeup and nails-and medical spa services, ranging from laser hair removal to Botox injectables and IPL photo facials.

Q: As it's the start of a new year, a lot of women are looking for a change. What would you recommend to someone looking for a fresh start?
A:
Hair color can absolutely transform someone's look; it's the easiest way to update your look. Combine that with a new style and magic happens. Another fun way to experiment is with extensions.

Q: How long has The Face & The Body been a L'Oreal salon?
A:
We're excited to have recently brought L'Oreal Professionnel products into our salon. For quite some time, we have been looking for a new product line that would really fit our clients' needs. L'Oreal products enable our clients to continue creating their own great hair days after they leave our salon.

Q: What is your favorite L'Oreal find for this season?
A:
Both our staff and clients love the L'Oreal Powerdoses. These are mini-treatments that can be added on to your regular hair service and that can provide a variety of outcomes: to help lock in color, to deep condition, to tame frizzes, etc. The Powerdoses are like a little boost in gas mileage.

Q: What will The Face & The Body be doing at Saint Louis Fashion Week this season?
A:
We're providing a team of stylists that will work on the models' hair backstage and carry out the designers' chosen hair looks. The team is already so excited about this chance to really flex their styling muscles. We want to show on the Saint Louis Fashion Week runways what others are only used to seeing in New York.

Runway Report
By Gina Bettelli

On a break from working the international runway circuit, Saint Louis Fashion Week's Key Makeup Artist-MAC Pro Team Senior Artist Gina Bettelli-gave us the glamorous details on what went on backstage at Kenzo and how to get the look this spring.
— Jill Manoff

Show: Kenzo
Season: Paris SS09
Makeup Key: Charlotte Tilbury

The girls were donned garden nymphs. . .straight from a book of tales with pop-up images. The makeup was ethereal and reminiscent of a geisha trademark with a mermaid palette. The eyes and cheeks ran together with shades of icy pinks and silver using Shell MAC cream color base, Platinum pigment and Dame powder blush.

Lips were bee-stung pink with a lavender aura using MAC See Thru lip color in the center of the lips and Beautiful Iris eye shadow dusted on the outer edges.

The skin was kept dreamy and perfectly sculpted using Face and Body foundation, with Studio Sculpt concealer only where needed and Mineralized Skinfinish natural powder. Dame powder blush was placed high on the cheekbones and intensified with Ancient Rose eye shadow.

Get the Look:

Skin:
Hydrate with Fix + and Studio Moisture Fix moisturizer. Apply Face and Body foundation using a #188 foundation brush with a stippling motion. Studio Sculpt concealer should be applied only where imperfections occur using #194 concealer brush. Buff Mineralized Skinfinish natural powder into the center of the face using #138 tapered powder brush in a circular gesture.

Eyes:
Sweep Shell cream color base all over the eyelid and high on the cheekbone using #252 flat brush in a sweeping motion. Place Platinum pigment on the inner crease of the eye using a #217 fluffy brush in a circular movement.

Cheeks:
Place Dame powder blush high on the cheekbone with a patting technique using a #116 blush brush. Ancient Rose eye shadow is rimmed under the eyes and seeps into the blush for a seamless transition using #224 tapered brush in sweeping strokes.

Lips:
Stain the lips using MAC See Thru lip color in the center of the lips. Allow a few seconds for the stain to absorb into the lips and dust Beautiful Iris eye shadow on the outside edges of the lips using #224 tapered brush.
